Fungal nail infections are common – over a million people are affected in the UK.
Fungal nail infections make up:
- A third of all fungal skin infections
- Half of all nail diseases
Toenails are seven times more likely to be affected than fingernails
Risk factors
Anyone can develop fungal nail infections, but there are also certain factors which increase the risk of you getting a fungal nail infection. These include:
- Getting older
- Certain sports such as running (footwear may prevent the feet from breathing) and swimming (use of communal changing rooms and showers) provide ideal conditions for fungal growth
- Smoking – the more cigarettes you smoke a day the higher the risk of getting a fungal nail infection
- Certain jobs that involve a person having their hands or feet in water, such as life guards or people washing dishes
- Some medical conditions such as psoriasis or circulatory problems
