Once you've had a fungal nail infection and treated it successfully, you'll be keen to avoid getting it again.
Here are some tips which may help you prevent catching the infection:
- Wash and dry feet thoroughly every day, especially between the toes
- Avoid sharing towels or bathmats with others
- Wear cotton socks and leather shoes to allow feet to breathe and absorb sweat
- Change socks daily
- Don’t wear tight-fitting shoes that stop sweat from escaping
- Wear flip-flops in shared bathing areas such as swimming pools and communal baths
- Always treat athlete’s foot early as the fungi responsible can easily spread to the nails and infect them
- Always treat fungal nail infections early before the infection gets the chance to pass to other nails
- Try to stop smoking – the risk of developing a fungal nail infection is greater in a smoker than in a non-smoker
